Official history speaks of the Portuguese mariner Diogo de Silves who is said to have discovered <\/span>the<\/span> islands<\/span> in 1427. <\/span>However,<\/span> the <\/span>archipelago<\/span> appeared<\/span> on <\/span>portolan<\/span> maps<\/span> as <\/span>early<\/span> as the 14th <\/span>century<\/span>, the first <\/span>known<\/span> being<\/span> the 1351 Atlas of the Medici. <\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

It <\/span>is plausible <\/span>that people <\/span>settled on the <\/span>islands at least <\/span>some 700 <\/span>years before that, <\/span>they would have<\/span> been Vikings <\/span>probably, but <\/span>possibly even much earlier. <\/span>Sediment cores have been <\/span>collected from several lakes and, in <\/span>a<\/span> layer <\/span>dated between AD 700 and 800, compounds <\/span>associated with cows and <\/span>sheep have <\/span>been <\/span>discovered in<\/span> them. An <\/span>increase in <\/span>charcoal particles and a <\/span>decrease in native <\/span>tree pollen in the <\/span>same layer <\/span>could indicate the clearing of land for <\/span>cattle grazing.<\/span><\/span><\/p>

Archaeologists<\/span> have <\/span>further<\/span> discovered<\/span>, <\/span>among<\/span> other<\/span> things<\/span>, rock <\/span>art<\/span> and <\/span>possibly<\/span> Carthaginian<\/span> and <\/span>megalithic<\/span> structures, <\/span>which<\/span> would<\/span> have been <\/span>built <\/span>according<\/span> to an <\/span>oriented<\/span> plan, <\/span>aligned<\/span> with<\/span> the <\/span>summer<\/span> solstice and <\/span>related<\/span> to structures <\/span>also<\/span> found<\/span> in <\/span>Sicily<\/span>, North <\/span>Africa<\/span> and the Canary <\/span>Islands<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>

Further scientific research is needed to be conclusive on this. But at least it suggests that a civilization existed that was advanced enough to travel this far and colonize these remote islands from quite early on.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

Because of the many settlers who came over from Flanders starting from the 15th century, the so-called flamengos, the Azores for a long time were also nicknamed the Flemish Islands.<\/p>

Nevertheless, the islands have always remained firm under Portuguese rule. Yet specifically the mills on some islands, as well as the preparation of a certain type of local cheeses on Pico and S\u00e3o Jorge, among others, are reminders of this part of history.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t
